Sal with the Stars: Tinseltown defies writers' strike

Opinion by Sal Morgan

The ongoing Hollywood writers' strike may have stopped some of the biggest (Cate Blanchett, Daniel Day Lewis, Julia Roberts) and sexiest (Brangelina, George Clooney, Johnny Depp) stars from showing up to The Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 13 for The Golden Globe Awards. But don't think for a second that all the red carpets around Tinseltown have been rolled up.

Thankfully there are still plenty of movies that have gotta hit the big screen which means plenty of premieres, press junkets and parties for stars to frock up, talk up and strut their latest stuff.

"I was sooo paranoid!" laughed Katherine Heigl when I ask her about choosing her own wedding gown at the premiere of 27 Dresses.

"I was more paranoid than I've ever been - much worse than any major event or movie premiere and I have no idea why. I mean I have been photographed before in a fancy gown and I've been bloated. I've looked bad and everyone's seen it. So why was I so worried? I have no idea!"

Perhaps it had something to do with saying, "I do" with the whole world watching? But now she's ready to move on.

"Comedy is my favourite thing to do. I love making people laugh and I'm about to start shooting another rom com called The Ugly Truth with Aussie director Robert Luketic," adds the Grey's Anatomy star.

"He did Legally Blonde and hes just the coolest guy ever," Heigl gushed. "It's super fun and I think he has a great comedic eye. I can't wait!"

Isla Fisher is going to be waiting a little while before she walks down the aisle with her funny fianc Sacha Baron Cohen.

The former Home and Away star who became a Mum in October, just signed on for the lead in Confessions of a Shopaholic and hits the big screen next month in Definitely, Maybe with Canadian hottie Ryan Reynolds.

"I just loved the fact that she was such a complicated character and a real woman. So often you read scripts particularly in this genre and the women are very one dimensional and it's all about costumes and hair and I felt like this was a real girl that we could all relate to," explained Fisher when we caught up in New York last week.

She adds, "April's forthright and she's a free spirit. She wants to travel and she's afraid of her own heart and I think I related to that when I was in my early twenties," she adds.

Now in her thirties Fisher seems to be living the dream. She's in love, lives in London, has a place in LA and is about to start getting paid to shop.

"Confessions of a Shopaholic is based on the Sophie Kinsella books which I've always been such a huge fan of so I'm really excited. It's just the story of a girl that loves to shop so I just get to spend up big time!" she laughs.

Fisher is "hoping to head home" to Australia before the middle of the year but for now, she's stuck in New York breastfeeding and shopping.

"I miss everything - my friends, Bondi Beach, the laidback lifestyle. I'm hoping I'll get back there really soon."

So are Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey who steam up the screen (with their shirts off - surprise, surprise) next month in Fool's Gold.

"Port Douglas was my favourite. The Four Mile Beach and the locals there. The whole place is great. It's pretty hard to choose," the dad-to-be tells Glamour Magazine.

"Yeah. It is amazing down there but I was so terrified about swimming. I never wanted to know what was in the water. Stingrays or sharks. I was so scared but then I fell madly in love with it," added Hudson who goes onto question her co-star about the number of photos we see of him with his shirt off.

"I have had three summers in a row: Malibu in 2006, then Australia for six months, then back to Malibu for four months to shoot Surfer Dude," confided one the sexiest men alive. "I've forgotten how to get dressed."

"Sure," says Hudson sarcastically. "Do you even own a sweater? A T-shirt will do Matthew?!"

"What's a T-Shirt?" McC's Surfer Dude expression seemed to ask.

I'll have more on these two and their shirtless scenes next month...
