Review: Step Up 2 the Streets
by Rashmi Chandramouli, Filmink, 19/03/2008In a surprise twist, Step Up 2 the Streets actually delivers something more satisfying than the original film, which is a real rarity with big screen sequels. In short, the film follows the story of a rebellious street dancer, Andie (Briana Evigan), and her battle to fit into the Maryland School of Arts. At the dance school, Andie meets Chase (Robert Hoffman), one of the school's hottest dancers, and together they assemble a team of unique and inspirational individuals (each with their own personalised dance style) who endure rigorous dance training sessions to develop and perfect a distinctive, crowd pleasing dance routine with which to compete in the ultimate street dance battle competition.
Despite the predictability of the plot and the emotionally void storyline, Step Up 2 the Streets does manage to deliver an impressive display of talent, with a host of fresh dancers, stylistically complex movements, and a suitable line of actors. With an accredited team of dance professionals on board in renowned hip-hop choreographer Jamal Sims and the highly regarded Dave Scott (who served as choreographer on the dance flick Stomp the Yard), the technical sophistication and originality of the dance routines far surpass those of most other dance driven films. If anything, the dancing is what drives the plot, and it quite evidently enhances the overall entertainment value of the film, making it viscerally engaging to the point that viewers are kept hooked and demanding more.
After viewing the film, it's hard not to compare it with the original, which understandably left many viewers underwhelmed. In comparison, Step Up 2 the Streets is surprisingly better, and will leave viewers (for the most part) feeling energised, satisfied and, most importantly, entertained.
