Kung Fu Panda

Kung Fu Panda

Rated PGParental guidance recommended
Animated violence, some scenes may frighten young children

Kung Fu Panda features Po the Panda, a lowly waiter in a noodle restaurant, who is a kung fu fanatic but whose shape doesn't exactly lend itself to kung fu fighting. That's a problem because powerful enemies are at the gates, and all hopes have been pinned on a prophesy naming Po as the "Chosen One" to save the day. A group of martial arts masters are going to need a black belt in patience if they are going to turn this slacker panda into a kung fu fighter before it's too late.

Review: Kung Fu Panda

3 and a half out of 5

Animated films are pretty much a license to print money these days in Hollywood, but every once in a while, one romps along that places itself a cut above the rest. And while the energetic and highly enjoyable Kung Fu Panda might not hit the heights of, say, Finding Nemo or Happy Feet (two of the best examples of the genre that you'll ever see), it's certainly a lot better than most.

The plot - even by animated film standards - is a simple one. Po (voiced with characteristic pizzazz by Jack Black, fast proving himself an unlikely favourite with the kids) is a panda with big dreams of becoming a martial arts superstar. His father, however, would prefer him to carry on in their family business of selling noodles. But when the evil snow leopard Tai Lung (a devilishly malevolent Ian McShane) breaks free of his distant prison, Po is identified as the "chosen one" who must protect his peaceful home from this encroaching threat. Trained by the reluctant Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman lends all the appropriate wisdom), the clumsy Po teams up with his kung fu heroes, The Furious Five (Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, David Cross, Jackie Chan), in the fight of their lives.

Though full of all of the standard messages (believe in yourself; don't settle for second best; always chase your dreams; never give up), Kung Fu Panda is also filled with something missing in most animated films: bone rattling action. Instead of the usual songs and general poncing about, this vividly designed fairy tale is driven by genuine martial arts dust-ups. Sure, it's not pitched quite at Bruce Lee levels, but this sense of hectic activity - combined with the snappy voice work and witty characterisations - make Kung Fu Panda the best kind of kids' entertainment.

All these animated films are getting a bit much now. I could handle Shrek but Kung Fu Panda?? Happy Feet?? Come on, where is all the talent people? i'm sure we can think of better things than Kung Fu Panda.....

'Simple for an animated film'? Are you suggesting that the usual drivel that comes out of Hollywood is more elaborate? The screenplay in animated films tends to be more complex and polished than the films supposedly targeted towards adults nowadays.
