Australia grosses $1.3m on opening day

The film, Australia, has grossed $1.3 million at the box office on its opening day.

Director Baz Luhrmann's epic romance starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman collected $1,307,853 in ticket sales nationally on Wednesday, according to Nielsen EDI figures published by Screen Australia.

It more than doubled the $575,596 taken on the opening day of Luhrmann's last film, Moulin Rouge! in 2001.

But it falls short of the massive $2.03 million racked up on one day by the latest James Bond caper Quantum of Solace when it was released last week.

I think you kidman hating excuses for humans are complete jokes and an embassment to the australian society. Wot are you all doing to encourage tourists to visit this beautiful country and in turn boosts the Aussie dollar???????.

I really think Nicole should be awarded The Raspberry Award for her performance in this movie.

Couldnt understand why Nicole loped around the movie with a funny gait...Looked like a handicap. No wonder the movie is a mega-flop.

I attending a screening of this film I have one thing to say. Fake! Sets fake, acting fake, directing fake. What story was it trying to tell? A British woman should have the lead role, or an actress capable of an English accent. People walked out.

All boils down to one thing in movies - S E X - and sexiness is something our Nic just doesn't have in spades, so they focus on Hugh but it takes two for chemistry up there on the big screen. Am i wrong?

Wonder how Hugh will get over this one? Has Nic dragged him down to her level? Will Wolverine ever be the same after this piece of cheesy cinema?

For all you people out there who didn't like it, I think that you just don't get it, this movie was not only entertaining but also an education in history. GOOD ONE BAZ

When will film goers stop supporting the tripe that Nicole Kidman features in, she is not an actress, but a trumped up marketed glamour girl full of botox

Errr Kay, Read the latest box-office receipts first before making that comment.

Ignore the negative comments, the box office result speaks for itself. Congratulations to Baz, Nic, Hugh and everyone involved in making this film and thanks for making us proud to be Australians.

Well maybe we thought we were in for a real treat instead of the farce we got. I for one feel ripped off.

I saw the movie on Thursday and absolutely loved it. I loved Nicole and Hugh and thought they played their parts beautifully. I think all the Nicole knockers should realize that Baz is not an idiot and that Nicole acted the way that he wanted her to

I work at gold class and people love it. all those kidmn hating peeep's need to appreciate a film on the whole value rather then the like of an actor/ress. Good film worth viewing remember its not real and a movie and its worthwhile

the critics of nicole are so pathetic, so a 'scrawny leg' or 'anorexic' body colour your opinions, what credentials do you have, McDonalds bodies?

It sounds like there are a lot of sour grapes on this page. Why does everyone have to be so negative? I'd hate to have your lives if all you can do to get your jollies is to bag Nicole Kidman.
